Massachusetts State Law requires that all college students be enrolled in a student health insurance program that meets required benefits established by the state. The required benefits, subject to change, are summarized as 80% COVERAGE UP TO $50,000 PER ILLNESS OR INJURY. The coverage is for a 12 month period, providing coverage 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world with some exclusions, co-payments, deductibles. Coverage for prescriptions this year is $1,500 per year.
MANAGED CARE PLAN COVERAGE: Any students who have a managed care plan and will be living outside their insurance coverage area while attending U Mass Lowell must choose a primary care provider in the Lowell area since benefits may be limited to a local area. PLEASE check the extent of your insurance coverage with your carrier before selecting to waive the University plan. Often lab work procedures and/or prescriptions from Student Health Services at U Mass Lowell will not be covered by a managed care plan.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: ALL International students are required to be enrolled in the University Student Health Insurance Plan. This requirement is authorized under the insurance laws for higher education students in Massachusetts (section 275 of Chapter 151 of the Acts of 1996).
If students have comparable coverage, they may select to waive the University Health Insurance Plan by going online to http://isis.uml.edu.by the deadline date of Sept. 18, 2008.
The waiver process is an official STATE REQUIRED process that is recorded for the state records in the Accounts Receivable Office and is subject to an audit. The health insurance charge will be removed from the student’s account once the selection form has been validated. This procedure must be completed at the beginning of every school year in case a change in insurance coverage has been made.
Every matriculated student must complete the online Enrollment/Waiver process. ALL matriculating Graduate students carrying nine or more credit hours per semester are charged for the University health plan and must also complete the online process.
PLEASE NOTE: Those students requiring proof of full-time enrollment for their own insurance company must submit this request to the Registrar’s Office.
