Message for Chancellor Meehan about H1N1 Flu

To UMass Lowell students and their families:

As we enter flu season, and in light of all the news about the H1N1 virus, I want to assure you that UMass Lowell has the resources in place to ensure a healthy environment for our students.

As a university with 13,000 students, almost 3,000 of whom live in campus housing, we have an excellent department of Student Health Services staffed with professionals with strong experience and expertise in preventing and managing communicable illnesses. The staff employs best practices in monitoring, education and prevention.

Our Student Health Services staff has been leading regular meetings with various members of the campus community since last year to ensure that we are doing everything possible to keep the incidence of H1N1 as low as possible at UMass Lowell and to have mechanisms in place to respond to any illness that arises.

First, we know that communication is critical.  We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available to us.  One place you can check for the latest campus health updates is our web page: http://www.uml.edu/student-services/health.

Second, we are working closely with the Lowell Board of Health and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning our institution.

Third, the campus will be offering both seasonal flu vaccine in October and H1N1 vaccine once it becomes available. Detailed information about the clinics will be available on UML Today (http://intranet.uml.edu/umltoday/students/), the Student Health Services web page, and electronic message boards throughout campus.

Fourth, we are letting all students know they must call Student Health Services at 978-934-4991 to report a fever and other flu symptoms.  Resident students will be expected to go home.  Persons diagnosed with flu must remain out of work or school at least until 24 hours after fever is absent, without taking fever-reducing medicine.

Fifth, we are educating the campus community extensively and consistently about personal protection approaches that include frequent hand washing, use of alcohol-based hand cleaners and the practice of respiratory etiquette by covering the mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.  We are also reminding everyone to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

UMass Lowell is committed to the protection of the health and well-being of our students. Please feel free to contact me or our Student Health Services if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Chancellor Martin T. Meehan
