Information for the UMass Lowell Community

If you are sick with the flu, below are some tips on how to take care of yourself and to keep others healthy.

Know the signs and symptoms of flu. Symptoms of flu include:

  • fever
  • chills
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny nose
  • body aches
  • headache
  • tiredness
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting

If you think you have the flu:
  • Stay home or at your place of residence if you are sick with a fever, except to go to the health care provider’s office.

  • Students who are sick should call Student Health Services at 978-934-4991 for advice.

  • Cover you mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective if soap and water are not available.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.

  • Stay in a separate room and avoid contact with others. If someone is caring for you, wear a mask, if available and tolerable, when they are in the room.

  • Drink plenty of clear fluids (such as water, broth, sports drinks and electrolyte beverages for infants) to keep from becoming dehydrated.

  • Contact your health care provider or Student Health Services for treatment if you are at higher risk for complications from flu. People at higher risk for flu complications include children under the age of 5 years, pregnant women, people of any age who have chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), and people age 65 years and older.

Call SHS at 978-934-4991 or Emergency Medical Services at 978-934-2911 right away, if you have any of the following symptoms:

    • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.

    • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen.

    • Sudden dizziness.

    • Confusion.

    • Severe or persistent vomiting.

    • Flu-like symptoms that improve for a day or more, but then return with fever and worse cough.

For specific information on how to take care of someone who is sick, see the CDC Information.

How Clean Are Your Hands?

Do you know how to wash your hands correctly? Check out this video of UMass Lowell Health Education Seniors Holly DeSimone and Bridget Kent demonstrating proper hand washing techniques. They even use a black light to check where germs are in order to help stop the spread of the H1N1 flu and other germs. This video was shot by David Brow of the Lowell Sun.

They also created this Public Service Announcement about the dangers of not washing your hands correctly.
