Frequently Asked Questions

1. What can I expect when I meet with a career counselor?

During your initial one-hour visit, your career counselor will ask you some questions about your career planning status and, based on your current needs, the two of you will begin to formulate a plan for reaching your goals.

2. What services are available through the Office of Career Services?

We offer individual appointments, resume and cover letter drop-ins, practice interviews, workshops and presentations, panel discussions, career fairs, on-campus interviews, company information sessions, job and internship postings (online and in the office), assessments, a variety of job search handouts and articles, and access to UCAN (University Career Advisory Network).

3. Can you help me find an internship or co-op?

Yes. You’re welcome to browse our internship/co-op binder, internship directories, and online internship databases anytime and, if you find something of interest, we’ll help you get started.  We can also guide you as you put together a resume and cover letter.

4. What if I don’t know what I want to do when I graduate?

It’s OK! We have several resources, including interest inventories and assessments, to help you figure it out. We’ll also ask you about your interests, skills and values so that we’re better able to make appropriate suggestions for possible career exploration.

5. HELP – I think I might be in the wrong major!

You’re not the first person to feel that way, and you won’t be the last. A career counselor can help you identify your goals, skills, interests and preferences and can talk to you about majors and occupations.

6. Do employers post job openings at the Office of Career Services?

All the time! You can access job and internship postings via our website; activate your eRecruiting account by logging in and completing your profile.  If you have questions about eRecruiting, stop in or call us.  You can also visit our office to browse our job posting binders (no appointment necessary).

7. What kind of information can I get from the Career Services Website?

From our website, you can access eRecruiting, which provides job and internship postings as well as dates for on-campus recruiting events. You can also research employers, investigate career options, download articles, find out about upcoming events, and connect to several other career-related websites.

8. Do you have career fairs?

Yes, we have several career fairs throughout the year. Some target specific majors or industries, but all fairs are open to everyone.  Check the Career Services Website for details on upcoming fairs, including lists of participating employers.

9. What can I expect during a practice interview?

A practice interview can either be with a visiting recruiter or a career counselor from our office. During the one-hour appointment, you’ll “interview” for a specific position and review a video recording of it with the person who interviewed you. Together, you’ll identify areas for improvement and talk about things that you did well. When you leave, you’ll have a solid preparation plan and a better understanding of the strategy behind interviewing.
