What can I expect when I meet with a career counselor?
During your initial one-hour visit, your career counselor will ask you some questions about your career planning status and, based on your current needs, the two of you will begin to formulate a plan for reaching your goals.
What services are available through the Office of Career Services?
We offer individual appointments, resume and cover letter drop-ins, practice interviews, workshops and presentations, panel discussions, career fairs, on-campus interviews, company information sessions, online job and internship postings (online as well as some printed internship, co-op, and seasonal resources in the office), vocational assessments, a variety of job search handouts and articles, and access to the University Career Advisory Network (UCAN/Mentors).
Do you place students in jobs and/or internships?
While we don't function as a placement office, we do provide students with the skills, tools, and resources to effectively find and apply for a variet of jobs and internships that match their personal and professional interests. We also have an active on-campus recruiting program which we invite all students to participate in. In addition, we have three career fairs throughout the year. We firmly believe that our students have the capability of being their own best advocates, and encourage them to assertively seek out positions which closely match their skills and interests. However, we remain a vital component in the process and we provide ongoing training and support in the implementation of an effective job search campaign.
What if I don’t know what I want to do when I graduate?
It’s OK! We have several resources, including interest inventories and assessments, to help you figure it out. We’ll also ask you about your interests, skills and values so that we’re better able to make appropriate suggestions for possible career exploration.
HELP – I think I might be in the wrong major!
You’re not the first person to feel that way, and you won’t be the last. A career counselor can help you identify your goals, skills, interests and preferences and can talk to you about majors and occupations.
Do employers post job openings at the Office of Career Services?
All the time! You can access job and internship postings via the eRecruiting system, accessible from our website; activate your eRecruiting account by logging in and completing your profile. If you have questions about eRecruiting, stop in or call us.
Yes, we have three career fairs throughout the year. Some target specific majors or industries, but all fairs are open to everyone. Check the Career Services Web site for details on upcoming fairs, including lists of participating employers.
What can I expect during a practice interview?
A practice interview can either be with a visiting recruiter or a career counselor from our office. During the one-hour appointment, you’ll “interview” for a specific position and review a video recording of it with the person who interviewed you. Together, you’ll identify areas for improvement and talk about things that you did well. When you leave, you’ll have a solid preparation plan and a better understanding of the strategy behind interviewing.
