Events & Programs
UMass Lowell celebrates annual traditions of accepting new students into the University community (Convocation) and congratulating those who have completed their courses of study as they leave the University (Commencement). There are several opportunities for involved students to be recognized for their leadership and commitment to improving UMass Lowell. There are also opportunities for students to expand their own personal styles and leadership skills. Below are some examples of these programs.
Convocation is the formal welcome of freshmen into the UMass Lowell academic community.
Leadership Development includes the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Leadership Honor Society. Membership by invitation only. For more information, contact: Mary_Connelly@uml.edu. Invitations are sent annually starting in August.
National Conference for College Women Student Leaders!
The National Conference for College Women Student Leaders is an annual conference held by AAUW (the Association of American University Women) at the University of Maryland College Park. For the fourth year UMass Lowell’s Dean of Students’ Office will sponsor a group of women student leaders to attend this conference. In the past, five women have attended and brought back exciting information regarding leadership, networking, and advocacy; last spring a group of 12 students and one staff member were in attendance.
Women student leaders attending this conference heard energizing keynote speakers and met inspiring Women of Distinction Award recipients. They participated in workshops focusing on advocacy, leadership, health and wellness, and “real-world” issues such as financial literacy and life after college. They were involved in preconference activities, community service projects, and skill-building events. In addition they had the opportunity to meet with dozens of recruiters at the Graduate School Fair. And they will enjoyed endless opportunities to network, network, network!
Once they return from the conference these women become a part of the Student Affairs Women’s Leadership Initiative and assist a group of staff members in the planning of campus events including speakers, and conversation dinners. This year they will participate in a regional Women Student Leader Conference in the spring of 2013.
