How to Hire a UMass Lowell Co-op

Decide upon your requirements and needs

The co-op coordinator, in consultation with faculty, can assist you in identifying tasks and activities that students at different levels can undertake for your organization. The responsibilities in your job description should provide meaningful and challenging learning experiences for the student. You may also want to review the academic curriculum in the respective College.

Post your position

All co-op positions are posted on our online database for jobs and co-ops. Once your position has been reviewed, the co-op coordinator will alert students to your opportunity, so that interested candidates can upload their resumes for your consideration. For questions about the posting process, contact Claire Hall, recruiting manager, or Karen O’Donnell, manager of co-op employer outreach, at 978-934-2355.

Interview candidates

You may choose to screen and interview students via phone, at your organization or on campus. We will be glad to facilitate on-campus recruiting and interview schedules for you. For a complete listing of all our employer services and tips on how to enhance your organization’s visibility on campus, please refer to the Employer Guide.

Hire and orient your co-op student

You make all hiring decisions and arrange a start and ending date with your new co-op student. Students will be temporary employees of your organization, so we strongly recommend that you provide the same type of onboarding and training process you would offer your other employees. You’ll find tips on orienting and supervising your co-op student in the Employer Co-op Manual.

Create learning goals and evaluate your co-op student

In the first weeks of the co-op, develop performance goals with your student. At the conclusion of the co-op period, you will want to use these goals as part of your overall evaluation process. The completion of learning goals and your evaluation of the student are required components of the co-op program.
