Accommodations
If determined to be Reasonable Accommodations (pdf), accommodations may be provided for individuals and disabilities.
Personnel from the Office of Student Disability Services coordinates with other University offices to provide students with appropriate accommodations. Based on specific disability, appropriate accommodations may include the following:
On-Campus Housing
Students with physical disabilities who wish to reside on campus should notify the Office of Student Disability Services when they have been accepted to the University to ensure that their special needs can be accommodated. Several of the residence halls are designed with ramps, elevators, special bathroom/shower facilities, and strobe warning lights to accommodate students with physical disabilities. We encourage students with physical disabilities to come to the campus and try out the dorm rooms and access to classrooms.
Allowing Personal Care Attendants (PCA)
Physically disabled students who require a personal care attendant (PCA) can receive assistance from other agencies such as the Northeast Independent Living Program or by interviewing other students who are interested in working in this capacity. Payment for the PCA's is the responsibility of the disabled student.
Some students with disabilities may require a note taker in some or all of their classes. The Office of Student Disability Services will coordinate this service with the disabled student.
The Office of Student Disability Services will employ individuals who are willing to read to visually impaired or blind students. Those requiring this accommodation should contact the Office of Student Disability Services one month in advance.
For students who are hearing impaired, sign language interpreters can also be arranged. Since the supply of registered, professional interpreters is extremely limited, early notification (2 months in advance) of this service is required.
Arrangements for special testing procedures/conditions such as extended time, oral exams (if appropriate to course format), use of tape recorder, or administration of the exam by the Office of Student Disability Services, can be made to accommodate students with disabilities, Early notification is mandatory.
Recognizing the individualized nature of conditions, each student is encouraged to make his/her need known to the Office of Student Disability Services, which will work with the student to provide the best possible accommodation available to those who qualify. Student with disabilities need to contact Student Disability Services personnel at least one month in advance to ensure delivery of services.
Currently we have minimal assistive technology available on the campus. A future vision and goal for the Office is to make assistive technology available throughout the campus.
The Office of Access Services provides for campus parking for students with documented physical disabilities.
Services
Services that are not accommodations are available to University students on a general basis, without requiring documentation of a disability.
Tutoring and academic support is available to all University students through the Centers for Learning and Academic Support Services (CLASS). Students with disabilities are entitled to have equal access to the Tutoring services which are available to all students. Students requesting additional tutoring beyond that offered to all students can make arrangements at personal expense.
The University's shuttle bus is handicapped accessible for those students requiring inter-campus transportation for academic or housing reasons. The bus schedule is accessible online and available at Student Information Centers as well as many offices throughout the university. Individual transportation needs should be discussed with event coordinators to confirm accessibility for all events.
