Geotechnical Engineering Research Laboratory

The Geotechnical Laboratories at UMass Lowell offer students not only a basic introduction into soil mechanics but also advanced soil testing.

  • The Undergraduate Soils Laboratory is equipped for basic soil properties tests that are simple but very effective in demonstrating the properties of soil to the undergraduate engineer. 
  • The Graduate Soils Laboratory has equipment for advanced tests such as consolidation, direct shear, tri-axial, and several instrumentations of most mechanical tests. 
  • The Civil and Environmental Engineering Structures Laboratory is also available for testing using Instron compressive/tensile machines.
