Center for Sustainable Energy

BusThe Center for Sustainable Energy develops systems to provide energy for various uses in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner. Combining undergraduate and graduate education, research, public service, and education of the public, the Center works with utilities, industry, local and national government agencies, international organizations, and other non-profit agencies.

The research team undertakes laboratory and field projects, including rural solar electrification, solar-electric vehicles, photovoltaic-assisted lighting, building on-site thermal efficiency test methods, solar design tools, solar resource databases, and PV battery testing.

     A few key projects include:

  • Photovoltaic systems for rural electrification in India, Sri Lanka, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Center collaborators are spearheading some of the largest electrification projects in the world, sponsored by the World Bank, the Solar Electric Light Fund, US AID, Rotary International, and other agencies.

  • The first electric bus in New England and New York, which the Center operated, monitored, and upgraded.

The first application by a U.S. retailer of a photovoltaic-assisted lighting system, running perfectly since 1992. A second generation system is being developed for a second location.
