Community Policing

The UML Police Department is committed to building partnerships with the community to ensure that the campus remains a safe place to work, study and live. Our goal is to understand and educate our campus community. We strive to work closely with faculty, students, staff and visitors, so there is a clear line of communication between the department and the community. We accomplish these goals by providing community based policing as well as education and awareness programs for the UML community.

What Is Community Policing?

Community policing is a collaborative effort between a police department and community that identifies problems of crime and disorder and involves all elements of the community in the search for solutions to these problems. It's proven that close ties are beneficial to both the police agency and its community members. At the center of community policing are three essential and complementary core components:

  • partnerships between the police and the community
  • problem Solving as a method to identify and solve problems of concern
  • education through programs and training

Community policing is a philosophy for doing police work. PROBLEM SOLVING is the strategy used to solve community problems of crime. PARTNERSHIPS and EDUCATION are the tools by which the problems are solved.

Here is a list of programs that our department offers:

  • Drug and alcohol awareness programs
  • Self defense awareness programs (Safe Program and Rape Aggression Defense, or RAD) – for more information on RAD, please view our brochure on the RAD Program.
  • Sexual assault awareness programs (how not to become a victim)
  • Training and awareness seminars (crime prevention programs and dorm safety)
