Case Study Research

The PHASE Case Study Team conducted in-depth case studies of two hospitals and two long-term care facilities in Massachusetts. These case studies described how the organization of each setting, the labor/management relations, and its associated interactions with payers, government regulations, competitors and labor unions shape the work environment conditions. The aim of these case studies was to explore the web of forces, both external and internal, that bear upon organizational decisions and that generate the direct experience of the workforce. With these case studies the team described and analyzed the context within which health disparities occur.

The case studies used qualitative research methods that included reviewing documents and various records, interviewing key personnel, conducting focus groups of employees, and making direct observations of the way work is conducted.
