RAMP UP is a math tutoring project that brings University of Massachusetts Lowell students to the Kathryn Stoklosa Middle School and the Henry J. Robinson Middle School in Lowell on a weekly schedule to provide academic support to students at risk of not passing mathematics classes. The goal is to increase math skills and achievement for students so they are prepared to move ahead with their classmates to the next grade. Twelve UMass Lowell students are tutoring in math classes at each  school contributing more than 65 hours a week in classroom help.

RAMP UP was developed jointly by the UMass Lowell Office of School Partnerships (OSP), UMass Lowell's Centers for Learning and Academic Support Services (CLASS), and the scools leadership and includes several powerful strategies for student academic success:

    1. Mentoring of urban youth by successful college students
    2. One on one coaching
    3. Small group instructional methods

A five-week pilot project at the Rogers Middle School in Spring 2009 found the following changes in the 31 students tutored:

    • Increased understanding of class lessons
    • Regular submission of homework
    • Positive attitude toward tutoring sessions

The pilot project was well received by the Rogers School teachers and students and, with the recomendation of  Lowell Public School's Superintendent Chris Scott, the project continues at the Stoklosa and the Roinson Middle Schools in the 2010-11 school year.

RAMP UP  is funded by the Greater Lowell Community Foundation and the Theodore Edson Parker Foundation.
