Keynote Speaker: Vernon A. Wall

"Dynamic!" "Current!" "Inspiring!"

These are just a few words that have been used to describe Vernon A. Wall and his presentations.

Vernon has accumulated 20-plus years of professional Student Affairs experience at Iowa State University, the University of Georgia, University of North Carolina-Charlotte and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

He has experience in Greek life, new student orientation, student activities, leadership development, global education and university housing.

Vernon currently lives in Washington D.C. where he serves as the Director of Educational Programs and Publications for the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), College Student Educators International.

Vernon has written several articles and has co-edited two books on issues of inclusion on today's college campus. His award-winning programs and presentations have been seen by thousands of students, faculty, and staff on campuses across the country and have been described as being "a learning experience - with a touch of wildness."
 

What is a New Student Convocation?

This event is the formal welcome for all students entering into the UMass Lowell academic community. It serves as the ceremonial start for our new students, just  as Commencement serves as the ceremonial finish for our seniors. This required freshmen event is the highlight of Opening Week and the official launch of the academic year. 

Convocation is an opportunity to meet fellow students and faculty as well as hear from Chancellor Marty Meehan, the College Deans, and our special guest speaker, Vernon A. Wall. The theme for 2011 Convocation is "One Better World."

Convocation Information

The 2011 Convocation ceremony will be held in the Campus Recreation Center (East Campus) at 10 a.m.
 

Directly following Convocation, all students are invited to the annual Club Fair and Block Party outside the Campus Recreation Center.  More than 80 student organizations will be represented and a free BBQ will be provided by Aramark.
