Nanomanufacturing Center

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program

The NSF-funded Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing (CHN) - an equal partnership between the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Northeastern University, and the University of New Hampshire - offers a summer research program for undergraduate students.

REU Program

Students selected for REU

Students have an opportunity to perform cutting edge research at one of our three institutions. Our students work in high-tech laboratories for a 10 week duration, May 29th to August 3rd, 2012. The CHN projects focus on robust, high-rate, environmentally-benign nanomanufacturing techniques, allowing transfer of nanotechnology discoveries to industry. Students work in collaboration with other undergraduates, conduct research under the guidance of their graduate student mentors and are supervised by faculty advisors and post-doctoral researchers. At the end of the research program, all students present their accomplishments and results to the CHN research community. Results from many of these projects have been published as conference papers and journal articles.  Students' presentations from previous summer programs are linked here. A list of this year's projects are listed here.

The summer research experience includes a weekly professional development component that allows skill-building in the following areas: laboratory safety practices relevant to nanomaterials, library search skills, oral communication, written communication and ethical reflection. The communication skills program is delivered by the science educators at the Museum of Science, Boston. A new addtion to our program is teh inclusion of a module on the Ethical Dimensions of Emerging Nanotechnology and Value Sensitive Design - providing an overview of the social and ethical dimensions of emergiing nanotechnologies, with an emphasis on how these issues intersect with engineering design decisions.

The 2012 Summer Research Experience for Undergraduate Program at CHN is funded by the National Science Foundation (awards: HRD-0851989 and EEC-0832785) as well as the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Northeastern University, and the University of New Hampshire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply?

You must have completed your freshman through senior years in an undergraduate institution or community college. You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident in order to participate in the program.

If you do not have U.S. citizenship or a green card visa status, no federal funding from the National Science foundation can be used to fund your stipend and housing. Opportunities for non-U.S. citizens are available in some instances.

What are the Participation benefits?

In addition to the educational opportunities offered by participation, all students will receive a stipend for the 10-week period of $4500. Separate from these earnings, participants will be provided with furnished air-conditioned apartment-style housing.

Which campus should I apply to?

All three campuses have equal numbers of student participants, and each campus has a specific research focus. Please indicate your preference to project and location on your application, and we will try to accommodate your interests.

Will you pay for travel to campus?

Unfortunately, funds are not available to travel to and from our locations.

Can I bring a car?

Depending on the institution, parking may be readily available, but in some cases require an additional fee.

What if I don't know anything about nanotechnology?

No problem! Here are some links that will get you started:
