Each year, the Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing (CHN) funds 12 positions (four each at Northeastern University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and the University of New Hampshire) in the research experiences for undergraduates (REU) program. In 2006 and 2007 additional positions have been funded by the National Science Foundation through the REU Supplement Awards.

Students selected for the research experiences for undergraduates (REU) program perform research in CHN laboratories for 10 weeks from early June to mid August. As individuals or in collaboration with other undergraduates, these students conduct research under the guidance of their faculty advisors, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers. Research projects include both a literature
review of relevant material and experiments related to CHN research. The undergraduates present the results of their research at the end of the 10-week experience. In addition, the students participate in a three-university professional development program that includes training in safety, literature searches, oral and written communication, presenting technology to the general public, and ethics; as well as industry tours, participation in the New England International Nanomanufacturing Workshop, and other events. With the support and consent of their advisors, these students may elect to continue research into the academic year and/or present their research at professional conferences.
The program is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have completed their freshman to senior years in a four or two-year undergraduate institution. Applicants must complete an application and submit a resume to CHN in the winter or early spring. Applicants are matched with available research positions and accepted candidates are notified later in the spring.
