Educational Background

PhD in History and Theory of Art in 2004 (Dissertation: "Painting a Theoretical World: Stuart Davis and the Politics of Common Experience in the 1930's"); BA in Art History from Queens College in NY

Scholarly Interests

Dr. Christ is currently progressing toward a book manuscript titled "Stuart Davis: Art, Politics, and Experience in the 1930's." This manuscript explores the career of the American modernist painter Stuart Davis in relation to the pragmatist philosophy of John Dewey, the politics of American Communism, and the broader cultural response to the transformation of American identity and geography between the world and wars.

Additionally, he is working on a project focusing on participatory tendencies in contemporary art and culture. Specifically, Dr. Christ is examining public art projects that seek to actively engage a diverse audience by straddling the boundaries between fine arts and other cultural forms. His aim is to better understand the possibilities and institutional constraints of current models of exhibition, reception and authorship, including issues relating to copyright and licensing.
