700+ Receive Flu Vaccine at Clinics

Health Services Expecting H1N1 Shots Later in Fall

Chancellor Meehan gets a flu shot
Chancellor Marty Meehan was among 700-plus people to receive the seasonal flu vaccine during one of the October flu clinics on campus.

Chancellor Marty Meehan was one of 702 UMass Lowell staff, faculty and students who received the seasonal flu vaccine from Student Health Services during the October clinics.

The H1N1 shot, which is expected to arrive on campus later this fall, is recommended for anyone with a chronic medical condition such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, neuromuscular disorders, or immune suppression due to disease or medication.  The H1N1 vaccine is being prioritized for pregnant women, direct health care workers, anyone caring for an infant under the age of 6 months, anyone ages 6 months to 24 years old and those with chronic medical conditions.

The best weapon of defense against any type of flu is to wash hands frequently, use alcohol-based hand cleaners and cover the mouth and nose with a tissue or an elbow when coughing or sneezing.

Visit the Student Health Services website for more flu prevention tips, links to government resources and to sign up for emergency notifications.
