Racial disparities in birth outcomes with a life course focus, Adolescent pregnancy.
Dr. Brewin has been a practicing nurse midwife for most of her career, caring for women and their families in a variety of clinical settings, hospitals, birth centers and homes. When working in the District of Columbia, she became interested in racial disparities because of the stark difference in birth outcomes among women living in the different neighborhoods of D.C. Black non-Hispanic women had low birth weights and infant morality rates similar to women living in third-world countries. White non-Hispanic women had the same or better rates than the national average. Reduction of low birth weight and infant mortality has been the goal of her clinical work and informed her research.
