For David Lustick, an assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education, music is an important – and constant – presence in his life.
“I’ve been a singer/songwriter since 13,” he says, citing inspiration from artists including Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and Mark Knopfler.
“Playing instruments and writing and performing songs helps keep me grounded, and gives me perspective outside the ivory tower setting,” he says. “I think performing also makes me a better professor – I communicate better, and I relate better to my students, many of whom are struggling through school or making a significant career change.”
Lustick has recorded three CDs – the most recent, called “Answered Prayers,” was recorded in Brazil, where he played most of the instruments and featured numerous students in guest spots. His earlier work includes “Making Memories” and “Lady Justice.”
On a whim, Lustick sent a copy of Answered Prayers to Rita Cary, disc jockey at 92.5 FM, The River, who produces a weekly program spotlighting local artists.
“I really didn’t expect to be selected – The River gets hundreds of CDs a week, but they featured a cut of mine called ‘Kiss the Ground’ which was great – it’s very rewarding when a stranger makes an emotional connection to something I wrote,” he says.
Lustick will perform at the 603 Lounge in Nashua on Nov. 18. To hear the cut played on The River, listen here.
