UMass Lowell Live@edu FAQ


Effective June 2, 2010, UMass Lowell Information Technology is partnering with Microsoft to launch "UMass Lowell Live@edu," a new online system for e-mail and other online communications services for UMass Lowell students. The University hopes this will provide a rich communications platform that will make it easier for students to communicate and collaborate.

1. Who is the eligible for UMass Lowell Live@edu?
The system is for any active UMass Lowell students, undergraduate and graduate students, day school or Continuing Education.

2. What features and products are included?
Students have access to a comprehensive suite of additional Outlook Live services including:

- Email with 10GB storage
- Skydrive with 25GB storage
- Office Live Workspace
- Outlook Calendar
- Instant Messenger
- Plus all the other features that go with Widows livetm   

All of these services are accessible from any Internet-capable device.

As this is a free service offered by Microsoft, there is limited support for these programs.  Information Technology is not responsible for any loss of data when using any of these programs.

3. How large is the email quota (storage space)?
Outlook Live Mail currently provides each student 10 gigabytes of storage for email and calendar contents. The email quota cannot be increased.

4. How do I access UMass Lowell Live@edu?
You can access UMass Lowell Live@edu from any web browser by going to http://mail.student.uml.edu.   This site allows to log into the Outlook Live at http://www.outlook.com, change your email password, and receive informational messages about the program.

For existing students, you MUST go to the change email password page to reset your password; then go to http://www.outlook.com to log on.  If you do not know your current password, you must contact the university Help Center at 978-934-4357.  Be prepared to provide personal information to validate your identity.  Once you change your password, it will automatically synch with the Windows Live environment at Microsoft.
 
For all new students, once the Registrar Office has verified your enrollment with the University, an account will be set up for you automatically. Then you MUST go to the change email password page to set a new password first; then log onto the new system at http://www.outlook.com .   Your initial password when your account is created is Ums12345678, where the last eight digits are your student ID.

For all students, when you need to log onto the new system; ensure you type in your full email address with “@student.uml.edu” on the logon page.  This is your Windows Live ID.  During the brief account activation process, you will be asked to answer two (2) challenge and response questions, then provide an alternate (non-UML) email address;  For the calendar, choose the time zone and location you are in.

Most importantly, you will be asked your year of birth; you should enter your real birth year. If you tell the system that you are under 13 years old; it will ask for a credit card number. You will not be charged any fee; the card is used for age verification only. Be careful when providing your birth year as once the data is saved, it cannot be altered.  If you require assistance, please contact the Help Center.

5. What are the benefits of UMass Lowell Live@edu?
UMass Lowell Live@edu offers significant advantages over traditional email services like Gmail, Hotmail, etc… Live Mail @edu uses Microsoft Exchange as the backend for its Email, contact, calendar, and task management, all of which can be shared with peers on the UMass Lowell network. This is the same the same service used by many large organizations for internal and external communications and collaboration.
The Calendar is an appointment book allowing other students to see when you are available and propose appointments with you.
Contacts is an address book so you can easily store and find contact information and create contact groups.

UMass Lowell Live@edu is hosted on servers managed by Microsoft to provide the highest levels of reliability and performance. You can use your UMass Lowell Email account to access an extended set of tools offered by Microsoft in their Microsoft Live suite of services including Microsoft Live@edu Messenger, Spaces, Microsoft Live@edu for Mobile, and Sky Drive, a 25 GB storage folder for documents you can share to coordinate both academic and non-academic activities.

6. Do I need to use a Windows PC or Microsoft Internet Explorer?
No.  All web-based services included in the UMass Lowell Live@edu suite can be accessed from Windows, Mac, or Linux.  You can use Outlook Live through any browser that supports HTML 3.2 and ECMA. This includes Internet Explorer, Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and other web browsers on computers that run UNIX, Apple Macintosh, or Microsoft Windows. Outlook Live Light (http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/ms.exch.owal.defaultlight.aspx) is a simpler version of Outlook Live that supports most older browsers.

7. Will someone at Microsoft be reading my email?
No, Microsoft will not read your email.  For more information, refer to Microsoft’s statements on located at:

While an automated process indexes your email content for fast search retrieval, no humans at Microsoft will be looking at your email.

8. Am I required to use the UMass Lowell Live@edu Email Service?
All university official business will be sent only to your University email address.  Hence you are required to use the UMass Lowell Live@edu email service.  You may wish to forward your student email to an alternate account using the Forward Email feature within Outlook Live.

9. What happens if I forget or want to change my password?
 
You can easily reset your password by visiting http://mail.student.uml.edu or going directly to the password change utility located at http://password.uml.edu

Only use the above websites to change your password.  Do not change your password via the
http://www.outlook.com as it causes password synchronization issues.

10. Can I use other email programs like Outlook to read email?
Yes.  You can use several different POP3 and IMAP4 email programs to connect to Outlook Live. The features supported by each email program vary. For information about the features offered by specific POP3 and IMAP4 email programs, see the documentation that's included with each program.  You may also reference “Access Your Account Using Other Email Programs” (http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/cc875899.aspx).

11. Can users access UMass Lowell Live@edu via Outlook Mobile Access or Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)?
No. Outlook Live doesn't support Outlook Mobile Access or WAP. Outlook Live supports Exchange ActiveSync, POP, and IMAP to access and synchronize a mailbox with a mobile phone. There are third-party applications that add Exchange ActiveSync, POP, or IMAP capabilities to mobile phones that don't natively support them.

12. Can users access UMass Lowell Live@edu email from their mobile phones?
Yes.  Users can check their email using a mail client on their phone or using their phone’s web browser. “Push” email capabilities are also available for Outlook Live customers using Exchange ActiveSync.

However, this service is currently not supported by the Help Center.

13. Does UMass Lowell Live include SPAM filtering?
Yes. The SPAM filtering included with UMass Lowell Live Edu takes advantage of SPAM reports from all 270 million Hotmail and Windows Live users.  For more information, see Spam Filtering with Outlook Live (http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/dd251294.aspx).

14. Can I forward mail sent to my University account to a different email service such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or my existing Windows Live Mail or Hot Mail account?
After you log into Outlook Live, you can set up a rule to forward your mail to an alternate account.   Choose menu Option -> Forward Your Mails Using IN Box rule.
Hint:  if you want to maintain the original sender’s information, use “Redirect the message to…”

15. Will my mail be migrated from the old student email system to UMass Lowell Live@edu environment?
Yes.  All email will be migrated over the first few weeks.  As this is a multi stage process, please be patient.  All NEW email will be delivered to the new system as of June 2nd.

16. Will my contacts and calendar appointments get migrated to Outlook Live?
Unfortunately, we can only migrate email messages from mailboxes hosted at UML to corresponding mailboxes hosted at Microsoft.  You will need to recreate your contacts and appointments.

17. Is my data in Windows Live backed up?
Data stored on Windows Live is NOT backed up. We recommend that you maintain a backup of your critical documents manually.

20. Can I use my account after I graduate?
Yes.  UMass Lowell Live@edu accounts are FREE lifetime accounts and can be used after graduation.   In the future, your email address will change to firstname_lastname@alumni.uml.edu.  Stay tuned for more information when the transition plans have been finalized.
