Wireless Networking: Linux

Setting up the Intel Pro 2915 Wireless card in Fedora Core 5 kernel version 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5

The information contained in this article is specific to the Intel pro set 2915 ABG wireless card and Fedora Core 5 linux kernel, but most of it will be basically the same for other wireless cards and other Linux OS’s.  It is important to type in the commands exactly as shown.  Note: Capitalization does make a difference.

Step 1: Log in as the root user in order to make the necessary configuration changes.

Step 2: Open the terminal window, which is found in: Applications®Accessories®Terminal.  When opened it should look like the figure below.

Step 3: The firmware for this wireless card does not come with Fedora due to licensing restrictions, but the firmware can be downloaded via the following command:

  • yum install ipw2200-firmware

NOTE: For the following steps keep in mind that Network Manager is not the only way to get wireless internet access on your computer, but it appeared to be the easiest for our testing purposes.

Step 4: After the firmware is successfully installed you will want to start Network Manager, which comes with Fedora Core 5.  More information on this program can be found on http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/

Step 5: If you have Fedora Core 5, or Network Manager already installed you may skip step 6, and go on to step 7.

Step 6: If Network Manager is not installed it can be downloaded via the command (Don’t forget that capitalization matters)

  • yum install NetworkManager NetworkManager-gnome

Step 7: Once Network Manager is installed on the system, it can be started by entering the following command in a terminal. (Again you must be the root user):

  • service NetworkManager start

Step 8: If you are unsure about using Network Manager as your primary network application, using this command is a good way to test it out. You can run this command every time you boot up your computer to start Network Manager.  However, if you know Network Manager works well for you and you want to have it start up every time by default, enter the following command in the terminal as the root user:

  • chkconfig --add NetworkManager

Step 9: Once the Network Manager daemon is running, log in as your user account and enter the following in a terminal:

  • NetworkManager info

NOTE: The Network Manager icon ( ) should appear in the Notification Area. If you do not have a Notification Area in your panel, you can create one.  If the icon does appear then you may skip steps 10 and 11 and move on to step 12.

Step 10 :Start by right clicking on the panel and selecting Add to Panel.

Step 11: Choose Notification Area from the dialog box, then hit Add.

Step 12: To make the Network Manager icon return every time you log in, enter the following in a terminal as the root user:

  • gnome-session-save

TOP

Step: 13 Next we will configure Network Manager with the proper settings.  At the root terminal enter the following information for this university’s network:

  • network={
  • ssid=“uml-student” or "uml-admin"
  • scan_ssid=auto
  • proto=WPA-TKIP
  • key_mgmt=WPA-TKIP
  • EAP=PEAP}

Hit enter after each line, once completed you may close the terminal.

Step 14: Next, open the Network Manager GUI by double clicking the cable icon in your notification area.

Step 15: Type in =uml-student or uml-admin in the network name box and choose WPA Enterprise from the wireless security dropdown menu.

Step 16: Make sure that PEAP is chosen for the EAP method and for identity type in your username (Firstname_Lastname).  For password type in your current school e-mail password. Do not put the @uml.edu or @student.uml.edu on your username.

Step 17: After entering your information click the “Connect” button, and experience the joys of wireless internet.  Good Luck!
