Migration Status 1750 mailboxes were migrated this past weekend. The total count is 2017. The total migration time is taking longer than expected due to the number of accounts and messages within those accounts. We will review the time line and communicate any updates to the next group of users we migrate during the weekend of January 21, 2011.

Key Dates to Remember
Your mailboxes will be moved to the new Exchange 2010 environment on a rolling basis during the month of January 2011. This is primarily due to the sheer number of accounts (4,000) and over 13 million messages. This will minimize e-mail downtime during migration weekend.
Users will receive an e-mail from the UMass Lowell E-mail Services team prior to their mailbox being upgraded. The schedule will appear on the Exchange 2010 Upgrade website. When it’s your weekend to move, a tentative schedule is as follows:
- Friday, 6 p.m. – mailbox will be shutdown
- Friday, 7 p.m. – mailbox upgrade begins
- Saturday, 6 p.m. – new mailbox available
| December 29 - 30 2010 |

Potential Impacts to E-mail Client Programs
Some Outlook 2003 users will need to make one small configuration change. Open Outlook 2003 and click Tools, Email Accounts, your e-mail account will be highlighted , click the Change button, select the Security tab, then ensure "Encrypt data between Microsoft Office Outlook and Microsoft Exchange Server" is selected. If you require assistance in making this change, please contact the Help Desk at 978-934-4357 or e-mail: help@uml.edu. See this job aid for instructions (pdf).
IMAP/POP clients will require configuration changes to outgoing mail (SMTP) settings:
- Outgoing mail server (SMTP) : smtp.uml.edu
- Change the port number from 25 to 587
- Ensure checkbox is enabled for SSL encryption
- Incoming mail server (IMAP or POP) remains exchange.uml.edu.
- All other settings remain the same.
Netscape and Eudora e-mail clients are not supported in Exchange 2010 due to SSL security limitations of these programs. Options include using the web-based email client (Outlook Web App), Outlook, or Thunderbird.
Blackberry phones that utilize the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) will not be able to connect to the Exchange 2010 environment. If you wish to connect to the Exchange 2010 environment, you will have to synch with the university’s Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), which requires a Client Access License (CAL) and the Blackberry enterprise data plan. Please contact the Help Desk for more information on connecting to the university BES server.
