How do I get a social security number (SSN) to work at UML?

You will need a SSN to work on campus at UML. See Working on Campus.

Can I get a job through the UML Campus Work Program?
No. This is not available to international students.

Can I apply for other jobs on campus?
Yes. Typical on campus jobs include working for Barnes & Noble, Multimedia Labs, Aramark Dining Services, the Library, Wannalancit Mills, Escort Services, the Recreation Center, Access Services, etc.

Graduate Students: Ask your graduate coordinator about a teaching or research assistantship.

PLEASE NOTE: International Students may only work up to 20 hours per week on campus when school is in session.  They make work up to 40 hours per week during the intersession and summer.

Can I work off-campus?
Only under the following circumstances:
A) You must be a full-time student for nine months (two semesters) before you can request off-campus work;
B) After nine months, contact the International Students and Scholars Office about Curricular Practical Training (CPT);
C) After nine months, contact the International Students and Scholars Office about how to work off-campus if you want Optional Practical Training (OPT) or have a severe financial hardship.

It is very important that you do not work off-campus without permission.  If you do, you may be asked to leave the United States.
