General Summary (Purpose) of Position
The Computer Science Department at UMass Lowell invites applications for one anticipated tenure-track faculty position to start in September 2009. The rank and tenure status will depend on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

UMass Lowell is located 30 miles northwest of Boston in the high-tech corridor of Massachusetts. The Computer Science department has 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty. It offers degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. It also offers bioinformatics options at all levels, and a computational mathematics option at the doctoral level.

The Computer Science faculty received approximately $3.8M in the last two years in external research funding from the NSF, DOD, DOH, and corporations, including two NSF Career awards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must hold a PhD in computer science or a closely related discipline, and be committed to developing and sustaining an externally funded research program. Preference will be given to outstanding candidates in the areas of data mining and databases, who would also add the ability to teach one of our graduate-level core courses, including algorithms, computing theory, and design of programming languages.

Exceptional senior level candidates in any major computer science research area will be considered. Exceptional candidates are those who have made substantial contributions to their fields and have strong ongoing research projects funded by major US funding agencies. In addition to developing a research program, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the collaborative research of the existing departmental groups.
