General Summary (Purpose) of Position
Direct the surface cleaning research and assistance program of the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) by developing and implementing surface cleaning research and assistance project goals and plans, in concert with Institute’s strategic plan.  Market laboratory services to Massachusetts’ industry and other customers; as well as continuously improve TURI’s established program for the testing and evaluation of safer and environmentally-friendlier cleaning chemicals and equipment on a variety of surfaces, for various industries and potential clients.

This position is contingent upon continuation of funding to the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute.

Examples of Duties:
1. Work with Massachusetts industry to provide cleaning testing services, and to assist them in troubleshooting cleaning problems by:
• Developing and implementing an outreach and marketing plan for laboratory services.
• Performing laboratory testing and providing client assistance, including on-site assistance. 
• Overseeing all laboratory testing and client assistance activities and supervising laboratory personnel.

2.   Support the educational aspect of TURI’s activities by:
• Publishing the laboratory’s findings in appropriate trade and scientific journals; updating existing TURI literature covering the laboratory.
• Preparing written reports and giving oral presentations of work conducted at the laboratory to industry, academia, government, and NGOs at conferences and other meetings.
• Developing trainings and internet products and tools based on the laboratory’s activities and testing results.

3.   Provide assistance and support in laboratory operations by: 
• Working with the Deputy Director to prepare an annual budget to cover operations, maintenance and capital improvements, reflecting the laboratory’s strategic plan.
• Monitoring expenses and making budget adjustments as required. 
• Determining the feasibility/impact of different types of laboratory accreditation and other partnerships to enhance the laboratory’s capabilities, professional standing and visibility.
• Exploring funding opportunities beyond the Toxics Use Reduction Program to enhance laboratory capabilities, facilities and equipment, and staffing.
• Maintaining necessary materials and equipment for effective lab operations.

4.  Provide for a safe environment by: 
• Managing biohazardous and chemical hazardous materials in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
• Following prescribed safety precautions, University and department rules and regulations.
• Using appropriate safety equipment and apparel as needed.
• Maintaining work areas in clean, orderly and safe condition.
• Providing training to staff and clients regarding safety precautions.

5.   Promote the University’s commitment to customer service by:
• Building effective partnerships with co-workers throughout the University by freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
• Ensuring optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information.
• Maintaining an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master of Science or higher level degree in chemical engineering, chemistry or other related field.
• At least ten years relevant experience.  Relevant experience includes analytical and/or testing laboratory experience, and metal parts, metal finishing or other industry experience.
• At least three years experience in surface cleaning issues required.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to interface effectively with industry,
• Ability to work collaboratively on project teams.
• Knowledge of environmental, health and safety issues, particularly as they pertain to industrial technologies and industrial and institutional cleaning.
• Demonstrated understanding of pollution prevention and toxics use reduction.
• Training and web development experience desirable.
