Description:

General Summary (Purpose) of Position
Enhance the commercialization of intellectual property (IP) resulting from research at University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) by interacting with researchers and other individuals involved in licensing and commercialization of technology.

Examples of Duties:
1. Promote the University’s goal of expanding technology commercialization by:
• Working proactively with faculty, staff and students on matters related to intellectual property resulting from research.
• Supporting the administration of UML’s IP Policy.
• Soliciting and receiving invention disclosures.
• Assisting faculty and staff in determining the ability to protect IP.
• Performing market analyses to determine commercial potential of faculty and student submitted inventions and technologies.
• Performing patentability assessment of inventions disclosures.
• Locating and organizing detailed information about invention for marketing purposes and actively promoting the inventions
• Identifying potential licensees.
• Working with others in CVIP and licensing counsel to draft and negotiate appropriate agreements.

2. Promote the University’s commitment to customer service by:
• Working to promote technology transfer and assisting Director in the development and maintenance of a strong customer focused partnership.
• Building effective partnerships with co-workers throughout the University by freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
• Ensuring optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information.
• Maintaining an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Advanced degree (preferably Ph.D.) in life or physical sciences and undergraduate degree in physics, chemistry, biochemistry or material sciences (nano and/or semiconductor materials).
• MBA desirable
• Minimum three years experience in technology transfer or similar experience in licensing or industrial business development.
• Ability to comprehend technical details.
• Ability to work with researcher in uncovering the invention.
• Ability to access alternative market opportunities.
• Strong marketing skills of new inventions.
• Demonstrated writing and interpersonal communications skills
• Previous experience mining and marketing of University IP desirable.
• Demonstrated negotiation skills.
• Strong marketing/sales skills, particularly of new inventions highly desirable
• Excellent grasp of U.S. and PCT patenting process.
• Working knowledge of license agreement structure. 
• Ability to manage a significant case load and work in a complex and evolving environment.

Supervision Received:  Reports to the Director CVIP/CVD
