General Summary (Purpose) of Position
The Department of Music seeks candidates for a full-time tenure-track position in Music Theory and Aural Skills for Fall 2008. We seek an individual with a strong background in theory and aural skills pedagogy to teach primarily undergraduate theory/aural skills classes, and possibly coordinate the theory and aural skills program. Some graduate-level teaching is also possible, including such courses as Music Theory Pedagogy, and/or various Style Analysis courses. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active role in professional development and research, faculty governance, and professional service activities.
The University of Massachusetts Lowell is situated 25 miles north of Boston in the city of Lowell, home of the Lowell National Historical Park, and is within a short commute to the seacoast and the NH ski and lake regions. Appointment to begin Fall 2008. Initial review of applications will begin February 1, 2008.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Earned Doctorate in Music Theory or Theory/Comp.
• Experience teaching the moveable-do/tonic-do system for both sight-singing and dictation.
• Demonstrated ability teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• 3-5 years of college teaching experience.
• Familiarity with representative literature from all major style periods of music.
• Sufficient keyboard facility to demonstrate theoretical concepts and perform aural skills exercises.
• Demonstrated clear and articulate communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to engage students in clearly articulated discourse.
• Demonstrated potential for publications in scholarly journals.
• Demonstrated ability working with diverse student and faculty population.
• Excellent organizational, computer and networking skills.
