General Summary (Purpose) of Position Our department has provided physical therapy education for the past 26 years, and currently offers a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree for entry-level students. The department also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology, which provides a career pathway into the department’s graduate program in Physical Therapy. All faculty members are doctorally prepared, some with clinical specialist certification. Graduates of the program are highly competent and sought after, with first-time licensing pass rates consistently well above the national average. The university, part of the five campus system of the University of Massachusetts created by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Legislature in July, 1991 includes the Lowell, Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth and Worcester campuses. Currently it is the largest institute of higher education in New England. The University of Massachusetts Lowell is a technologically-oriented campus with three degree clusters: 1) engineering /management/ science, 2) health, and 3) education. Graduate students account for 3,470 of the over 14,526 students enrolled in both state-supported and Continuing Education Programs. UMass Lowell is a nationally ranked research university with over 26 million dollars in funded research being conducted each year The School of Health and Environment also includes Departments of Nursing, Clinical Laboratory and Nutritional Sciences, Community Health and Sustainability, and Work Environment. Interdepartmental relationships are good and collaborative projects are enhanced by the Center for Health Promotion and the Center for Health and Disease Research. Department research support includes state of the art cardiopulmonary, motion analysis and neurological assessment facilities. Individual faculty members are engaged in a variety of research projects, some including community outreach projects. The university supports faculty research and funding through the Research Foundation. The city of Lowell is located 25 miles north of Boston in the heart of the birthplace of America’s Industrial Revolution and site of an Urban State and National Park. The Merrimack River runs through this city of 103,000 which hosts the Tsongas Civic Center, university and professional baseball at LeLacheur Park, and hockey adjacent to the University’s campus. Access to Boston and Worcester is easy via car or commuter train. The lakes and mountains of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, as well as the shores and beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod, are short driving distances away.
