The Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended 2008 applies to employers with 15 or more employees. This Act protects applicants and employees with qualified disabilities from discrimination in hiring, promotion, discharge, pay, job training, fringe benefits, classification, referral and other aspects of employment on the basis of disability. Also required by law are reasonable accommodations for:
- Students with disabilities.
- Qualified applicants with disabilities.
- Staff/faculty with disabilities.
Some disabilities are physical. Some disabilities are visible. Many disabilities are neither visible nor physical. Do not assume that someone does or does not have a disability.
UMass Lowell's Persons with Disabilities Administrative Announcement (pdf) describes equal opportunity rights and prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities, people perceived to be disabled, people who had a disability now in remission, and people who are closely associated with an individual with a disability.
