Degrees in Occupational & Environmental Hygiene

Learn to prevent illness and injury in the workplace. Recognizing, evaluating, controlling and preventing chemical, physical, biological and psychosocial hazards in the work environment are the focus of this field of study. With your master’s or doctoral degree in OEH, you’ll have the tools to not only keep people healthy, but also productive at work. You’ll learn to diagnose exposure problems, develop sampling strategies, and collect and measure samples to diagnose environmental risk factors that threaten worker health and safety. You’ll also study how to design and implement more sustainable production systems.

Wor Environment’s Master of Science in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). This program can be completed in two years of full time study (36 credits).

To earn your Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) in Occupational & Environmental Hygiene, you will work with Dhimiter Bello, Michael Ellenbecker, Margaret Quinn, or Susan Woskie, and will complete at least 30 credits of course work and doctoral dissertation research in one of the following areas:

  • Exposure science and biomarkers
  • Exposure hazards and controls in health care
  • Indoor air & healthy buildings
  • Exposure hazards and controls in nanotechnology
  • Sampling & analytical methods for airborne contaminants
  • Exposure assessment for epidemiology
  • Noise hazard assessment and control
  • Toxic use reduction or integration of sustainable production and occupational hygiene
  • Exposure hazards and controls in construction


One semester of undergraduate math, biology, physics, and chemistry with a grade of C or better are required.

Students who graduate from this program are expected to be proficient in the following areas. These student outcomes represent key competencies for the masters level practitioner in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene.

Technical Competence

  • Demonstrate ability to conduct a job-hazard analysis and prepare a well formulated written report 
  • Can recognize potential adverse health effects of workplace exposures and prioritize risks 
  • Can effectively evaluate existing control systems and recommend an effective control strategy, including PPE, engineering and administrative controls, toxic use reduction and process change.

Analytical Competence

  • Can conduct a comprehensive workplace hazard analysis, prepare a well-formulated written report and prepare a presentation of the findings.
  • Can develop a comprehensive sampling strategy, collect, analyze and interpret
  • Can conduct critical analyses of OEHS scientific literature 

Effective and Ethical Practice

  • Can produce effective written communications and professional presentations
  • Understand the elements of effective teamwork 
  • Can describe the components and functions of a comprehensive OEHS management & training system and is familiar with the roles and responsibilities of OEHS leadership in workplace programs 
  • Understand the range of modalities for effective worker training 
  • Understands the principles of ethical professional conduct in the OSH research  
  • Is familiar with the OEH professional code of ethics
