Civil Engineering: Concrete Canoe
A note from Jonathan Ernst ’14, Team Project Manager
The Concrete Canoe Team here at UMass Lowell has had increasing success over the past few years.
In 2012, the “Revolution” Team came in second at the Regional Competition and was invited to attend the National Competition, where they placed 13th overall. Then, in 2013, the “Moswetuset” Team earned first place at the Regional Competition—the first win in 19 years for UMass Lowell. This allowed the team to attend the 2013 National Concrete Canoe Competition where we placed sixth in the Nation.
Our goals this year are to continue pushing the limits of innovation through research and exploration of new materials, design, and construction techniques. As a team we are passionate about our project and each year the team pushes harder and harder to reach the ultimate goal of taking home 1st place at the National Concrete Canoe Competition.
Travel and Competition costs are the largest costs the team has to pay. We are reaching out and asking for your help! With your generosity, we as a team can continue learning, researching, and exploring new boundaries that we could not before. We can attend the competitions, not having to worry about how many of the team we can bring due to costs, giving everyone on the team the opportunity to have an experience at these competitions.
