The Young Scholars Program, also known as the Young Engineers Program or the Young Scientist Program, was created in 1999 as a part of the University's commitment to improve Lawrence Middle School students' academic performance in Math, Science, Education Technology, and English Communication. Students enrolled in the program attend classes during the summer, four days a week, for six weeks.

Goals of the Program
- Providing high quality academic programs and instructional strategies that address different learning and teaching styles.
- Providing a safe environment with reasonable class sizes.
- Providing teachers and students with adequate curriculum resources.
- Celebrating the many cultures which comprise our student body.
- Ensuring that all students, regardless of background or experience, are treated fairly and respectfully.
Forty students are selected to participate in the Young Scholars Program. The intention of the program is to provide students with a "heads up" on the grade level that they will be attending in September. Students attend daily classes, seminars and extracurricular activities which are strongly focused around an integrated academic curriculum.

Students participating in the Young Scholars Program attend academic classes in the areas of Mathematics, Science, English Communication, and Educational Technology. These courses are designed to enhance students' academic skills by engaging them in a meaningful learning experience.

Tutoring/Academic Counseling Program
Recognizing the unique learning styles of each student, the Young Scholars Program offers Academic Tutoring. This service is available to all students needing academic support. Tutoring is provided by peer mentors and/or University students.

Students have the opportunity to enhance their learning experience through a variety of extracurricular activities. These activities include:
- Educational Field Trips
- Yearbook Committee
- Sports
- Arts & Crafts
- Community Speakers
- Cultural Sharing Day
- Talent Shows
Students are required to work on an "end-of-the-program project". The planning, development, and completion of the end-of-the-program project is conducted throughout the six weeks of the summer program. The final project is displayed by the students during the closing ceremony. Students have the opportunity to display their work and share their experiences with other students participating in the program.
