The Graduate School of Education makes admission decisions on a rolling basis. Candidates may be admitted for fall, spring or summer semesters; however, there are application deadlines if you wish to be considered for doctoral teaching assistantships (teaching assistantships are generally not awarded to the master’s students), scholarships and/or admission to the “Fast Track to Teaching” program. You can request an application or complete one online at the Graduate Admissions site. Completed applications (including GRE scores) must be received by Graduate Admissions before or on the dates listed below. Information about admission to the graduate program can be found in the graduate catalog.
Application Deadlines
- March 1: For all candidates seeking admission for the fall semester and wishing to be considered for a teaching assistantship (doctoral students only) or for a scholarship (all graduate students).
- April 1: For all candidates seeking admission for the summer semester, but not wishing to be considered for teaching assistantships and/or scholarships.
- August 1: For all candidates seeking admission for the fall semester but not wishing to be considered for teaching assistantships and/or scholarships.
- December 1: For UMass Lowell Undergraduate Seniors seeking admission to the FAST TRACK TO TEACHING PROGRAM for spring semester admission.
- January 1: For all other candidates seeking admission for the spring semester.
Policy with respect to the Graduate Record Examination
Initial Licensure Programs (including the Fast track to Teaching)
Applicants to the M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction Initial License Option (including the Fast Track) may submit proof of passing the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) instead of submitting GRE scores.
Elementary Program – MTEL scores for Communication and Literacy Skills and the General Curriculum Test
Middle/Secondary Program – MTEL scores for the Communication and Literacy Skills and Subject Area Test
Advanced Masters, CAGS and Doctoral
The Graduate School of Education accepts only Graduate Record Examination scores (verbal, quantitative and writing sections). GRE scores are required of all applicants to advanced master’s, CAGS and doctoral programs even if the individual already holds an advanced degree. The only exceptions considered are for applicants with a Ph.D., or other research based doctoral degree and for those with a M.Ed. or CAGS from UMass Lowell’s Graduate School of Education. An official score report is required; however, if the applicant’s GRE scores are no longer available and s/he has access to a clear and unmarked student record, this may be submitted for consideration. Applicants may be asked to re-take the GRE if the admissions committee considers this may strengthen the application. As a guideline, scores of 500 Verbal, 500 Quantitative and 4.5 Analytical Writing are acceptable. The admissions committee makes a holistic judgment, taking into account all aspects of the submitted materials, when deciding whether to admit a candidate.
GRE scores are not required for admission to the 12-credit CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS
* Teaching Children with Moderate Disabilities (begins Summer '09)
* Teaching English as a Second Language (begins Spring '09)
