DUTIES OF THE GECC
  • Receive and act on recommendations proposed by the Coordinator of General Education.
  • Develop specific procedures to implement the General Education Requirements.
  • Act as liaisons to academic departments to ensure that all departments' curricula satisfy the General Education requirements.
  • Review syllabi for proposed General Education courses to determine whether the learning outcomes are covered in these courses.
  • Maintain a list of courses approved for General Education.
  • Develop means for broad dissemination of General Education policies to students, faculty and administration.
  • Recommend policy decisions to the Undergraduate Policy Committee as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for administering the former General Education requirements and for making the transition to the new General Education requirement.  
     
General Education Coordinating Committee
The General Education Coordinating Committee (GECC) is a subcommittee of the Faculty Senate Undergraduate Policy Committee, charged with implementing the general education program. The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate appoints the members of the GECC.

The membership of General Education Coordinating Committee (GECC) includes 
  • Four faculty members from the divisions of the Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
  • Two faculty members from the Division of Science
  • One faculty member from each of the Colleges of Engineering, Management and School of Health and Environment
  • The Coordinator of General Education (nonvoting)
  • One representative from the Continuing Education faculty (nonvoting)
  • Two undergraduate students (nonvoting).
Departmental General Education Review Committees

Each department will create a general education review committee consisting of three to five members.  This committee is responsible for determining which courses in the department will be offered for general education and that the courses meet the requirements for general education.  In addition this committee oversees the general education for their major students regarding learning outcomes 4-7.
 
The Coordinator of General Education
 
The Coordinator of General Education is a faculty member nominated by the Faculty Senate Undergraduate Policy Committee and recommended to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, who will then be recommended to the Faculty Senate for confirmation.
 
Policies, Rules and Regulations
 
All courses that are given for satisfying the General Education Course Distribution Requirement must be reviewed by the General Education Coordinating Committee.  Course sections must be limited to a maximum of 30 students.  The General Education Coordinating Committee retains the responsibility to permit larger section sizes. 

A student can take a maximum of two courses from a single department in satisfying this requirement.

Courses that meet this requirement may also count toward a minor at the discretion of the department offering the minor. 

Interdisciplinary courses are identified as primarily belonging to one the following categories:  Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, or Science and Technology.
 
Students whose major falls into the categories of mathematics or science and technology or whose professional major is cognate with one of these areas are exempted from the specific requirement of that category.

To satisfy a General Education requirement, a transferred course must be equivalent to a UMass Lowell course that satisfies the specific requirement.  Equivalency for any transferred course will be determined by the UMass Lowell department that offers the equivalent course.
