Smart Start Orientation

Christine Silvar

Chrissy Silvar
Chrissy is a second-year Orientation Leader.  She is a member of the class of 2011 as an English major from Fitchburg, MA.  Chrissy is also a member of the UMass Lowell Women's Track and Field team and is involved in Residence Life.

Why did you choose UMass Lowell?
I originally chose UMass Lowell because of the strong Division II Women's Track & Field team and the Exercise Physiology undergraduate program.  It was close to home but still far enough away to be independent ... and it is also certainly affordable.

Describe your UMass Lowell experience:
After transitioning from high school to college, I got more involved on campus besides with athletics.  I've met all different kinds of people and created a great support system to help me succeed.  I've gained strong friendships with a diverse group of people, which makes every day new and exciting.  Once you get involved, it's hard to stop!!  After getting involved and knowing I can play an important role, it gave the confidence that I carry with me in all aspects of life.

Why did you decide to become an Orientation Leader at UMass Lowell?
I decided I was going to become an O.L. at my own orientation in 2007.  After seeing the enthusiasm, I knew this was something I wanted to be involved with.  Besides being fun and friendly, they were also a helpful resource ... even throughout the rest of the school year.  After their help, I felt prepared for college because they helped settle my nerves.  Each session I look forward to making the same impact on the incoming students that my O.L.'s had on me.
