Check-In Information for Band Camp

Check in at Fox Hall, UMass Lowell East Campus, the dorm for band camp at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2012.
The following is a general overview of events/details to consider.
Schedule:
Check-in on Sunday, July 15, between 4-5 p.m. in the lobby of Fox Hall, East Campus. Student staff members will be there to assist you. Rooms are pre-assigned. Please do not arrive early.
The first meeting of all members and parents will be held in the Fox Hall Cafeteria at 5:15 p.m. and will last approximately 25 minutes.
Band camp ends on Saturday, July 21 with a one & half hour concert followed by a reception. The concert is at 12 p.m. an awards ceremony and reception will follow. All family, friends and band directors are invited to attend the concert and reception.
Instruments/Concert Seating
Please bring the instrument you intend to play with you. Percussionists should bring mallets/sticks in percussion stick bag.
If you do not own your own instrument or can not bring one such as a piano or percussion instrument, one will be provided by the band camp staff.
Auditions for seating placement will take place Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. Students must prepare the pieces that will be enclosed in a mailing. All students will be sent first parts of several works for comparison of musicianship levels.
Jazz Band
All students with "usual" jazz band instruments will be placed in such ensembles. Other ensembles occurring at the same time include Flute Choir, French Horn Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Clarinet Choir. If you would like to be in one of the jazz bands, please bring a lead sheet and ask your band director if you are unfamiliar with the term (basically a head with changes). A sample is enclosed in the mailing. It is not required that you use this particular work.
Details and Reminders
Meals are provided, with the exception of Sunday night (pizza will be available for students). If you want snacks, feel free to bring them.
Housing (bed/linen/pillow) is provided. Bring a blanket, fan, alarm-clock, dark blue jeans and warm sweatshirt. The concert hall is air conditioned.
Dress comfortably and appropriately, and plan on both cold air conditioning and hot weather. Some suggestions/reminders: sneakers, concert dress blue jeans or dark blue pants, something warm to wear in air-conditioning, water bottle, swim suit & towel (pool available after an evening session- but not in 2011 camp), soap, book, personal items. alarm clock, instrument, pencils, reeds, valve oil and mutes. Money is not necessary, but there is a snack shop, bookstore and there will be items available for purchase.
Instrument lockers are available, but you should bring a combination lock.
Storage rooms are provided for percussionists & for amps (guitar, ebass use regular locker). Upright bass, tuba- there are upright bass/tuba lockers, bring a combo lock.
Emergency
In the event of an emergency: During the day, students can be reached through the Department of Music at 978-934-3850. Please let them know that your child is a student in the UMass Lowell Band Camp currently taking place. Instrument identification also helps!
During the evening hours, students can be reached at Fox Hall through the Campus Police at 978-934-2398 (emergency only). Students are welcome to bring cell phones, but are not able to use them during rehearsals or classes.
