Department of Cultural Studies

As indicated by the diversity of courses listed here, ideas about gender help to shape our understanding of psychology, philosophy, politics, economics, literature, history, business, criminal justice, sociology, art history, communications, and law. The Gender Studies Minor is designed to deepen students insight into the formative role of gender in the theoretical definition, historical development, and practical aspects of all of these fields.

While all of our courses address gender-related issues, most focus on the way gender inequality has influenced and still constricts women's lives. Without slighting men's experience, these courses enable students to explore how sex discrimination affects women of different races, cultures, classes, and sexual orientations. Since gender bias remains one of the defining aspects of contemporary society this approach should appeal not only to women, but also to all students who hope to understand the major issues of our time.
