University Crossing, a vibrant hub for UMass Lowell students and the community
On Jan. 25, 2011, UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan announced the acquistion of the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lowell, which will provide much needed space for a student body that has seen a 30 percent increase in undergraduates in the past three years.
University Crossing will offer an important connection point between the university’s three campuses and the downtown business and cultural district, all located within walking distance.
Including six buildings and nearly 300,000 square feet of space (not to mention 300 parking spaces), University Crossing will increase UMass Lowell’s total square footage by 10 percent to top 3 million.
The possibilities for the new property are great. Space for student services and activities, community programs, a centralized and expanded bookstore and student dining options such as a food court are just a few of the options being considered as part of a multi-year, multimillion-dollar renovation. Plans are already in place to relocate University Police and some administrative functions to the site as soon as possible.
