Janssen Scholarship Award - recipient Michael O'Connor
Judith Fredette was awarded a $10,000 scholarship by the Massachusetts Hospital Research and Educational Association (MHREA), the Tufts Health Plan Foundation and the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education for her doctoral program studies in nursing and health promotion. Judy's research area of interest that she plans to pursue relates to quality of life of people who have multiple sclerosis. Judy also received $2000 from the Dr. Futrell Scholarship Fund.

Callista L. Roy, RN, PhD, is a Professor and Nurse Theorist at the William F. Connell School of Nursing at Boston College, where she teaches doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students. Congratulations to Catherine Fogg, who was selected by the Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association (FNSNA), Inc. to receive the Promise of Nursing for Massachusetts Regional Faculty Fellowship for $7500. The criteria for eligibility and the selection process for the Fellowship were determined by the Trustees of the FNSNA. Funding for this program is administered by the FNSNA.
Catherine Fogg successfully defended her doctorate in nursing, entitled "Beliefs and Intentions of the Homeless toward HIV Screening."

UMass Lowell Health Fair Attempts to End Homelessness
One new Ph.D. student (Fall 2006), Ameia Yen-Patton, is a seasoned nurse practitioner and her expertise and experience in caring for dementia patients led her to produce a DVD entitled "Positive Interactions: Caring for a person with Alzheimer's" and a guideline booklet entitled "A new look at the old positive interactions: Caring for a person with AD" published by AJN, the Gerontological Society of America, and Trinity Health Force Learning. Her scholarly work advances our understanding AD and this understanding can be translated to not only informal and formal caregivers but also health policy makers. Ameia, thank you for making this significant contribution in nursing science!
Susan Hamilton and Theresa Leonarczyx, current doctoral students in the Nursing Ph.D. Program have received the Promise of Nursing for Massachusetts Regional Faculty Fellowship for the amounts of $6000, and $6400 respectively. This fellowship program seeks to address the national crisis of nursing educator shortage by providing funding for registered nurses pursuing graduate education to prepare them for a career as a nurse educator.
