Art and Music Schedule

 

March 25 - “The Lowell Painters of the Nineteenth Century, ”  Dr. Liana Cheney, Dept. of Cultural Studies, UMass Lowell.

Some Lowell painters founded art schools and art societies, they were landscape, still life painters, and others chose religious subjects.  She will introduce us to at least eight of the leading painters.

April 1 - Signe Kaleel, Fiber Artist, 122 Western Ave., studio #3A, 3rd floor annex

Signe works wonders with textiles and other materials. She will demonstrate Dry Felting which can enhance knit and crochet work.

 April 8 - Peter Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, Dorothy Bromage

Some basic concepts will be discussed.

...Musical form of a symphony

...Instruments of the orchestra

...The score

...The conductor

...The composer

Peter Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony will be used to explore the above concepts, and the life of the composer will be presented.  The program will end with a video recording of the complete innovative and exciting symphony.  Although the program will be geared to the person with non-musical background, those who are musically literate will gain much information.

April 16 (Thursday) - Boston Symphony Orchestra, open rehearsal

Yuri Temirkanov, conductor, Julia Fischer, violin in a Beethoven and Mahler program. Meet at Hannaford at 7:15 a.m., $32.85 for members ($42.85 for guests).  Checks should be made out to Jean Rubinstein and mailed to her at 15 Fairbanks Road, Chelmsford, MA 01824, no later than March 30.

April 22 - St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 44 Bowers St., Lowell

Father Faris will happily familiarize us with the Romanesque church built between 1879 and 1881 for French Protestant mill workers. In 1917 it became an orthodox Christian church for Syrian and Lebanese worshipers. It is on the National Register of Historical Places.

April 29 - The Art of Francisco Goya (1746-1828), Jean Schott

Jean will present a power point session about the great Spanish court painter of the Romantic period.

May 6 - “When Music is Animated, When Dancing is Fun”, Dorothy Bromage

In the first hour will be seen examples of animation from “Fantasia” to “Animusic”. Then in the second hour, many types of dancing with unusual interpretations of music (ex. “Singing in the Rain” and “Royal Wedding”).

 

May 13 - Home/Studio of Miko Kaufman, 23 Marion St., Tewksbury

Seven years ago Miko and Elsie Howell showed LIRA Miko’s sculptures, presidential coins, and numerous other artistic works. We have the opportunity again to enjoy seeing his achievements.
