September 30 - LOWELL CEMETERY
The Lowell Cemetery was conceived by a group of prominent Lowell citizens in 1840 as a private non-sectarian, non-profit corporation.  It was modeled after Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, the first garden cemetery in America.  The curved roads and paths under a canopy of oaks, beeches, and ashes create the setting for a depository of cemetery art, some of elaborate design.  Catherine Goodwin conducts the guided tour which begins at the oldest section.  Enter the Lawrence Street gate.  Once inside, park along Washington Street.

October 21 – THE FISK ORGAN
The organ built by Charles B. Fisk for Houghton Chapel at Wellesley College is designed specifically for the performance of 17th c. North German organ music.  Certain reed stops are copied from a 1636 organ in Lubeck, and from a 1610 organ in Copenhagen. We will have a tour of the organ followed by a mini-concert. Then the Dean will conduct us around the chapel.  We can have lunch at the College Club on the Lake (aprox $20/pp). I believe there are two handicap spots at the Chapel.  Others can park near the Club (a short walk away).  We will meet at Hannaford’s at 9:00 am sharp.  Directions and maps will be provided at the Convocation and at Hannaford.

November 4 - “WHAT MAKES A GREAT SYMPHONY?”
Presenter:  Dorothy Bromage*

This is a continuation of Dorothy Bromage’s Spring Study Group in which the workings of a symphony orchestra were discussed and illustrated.  With new media, the components and development of a symphony will be highlighted using Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 4.”  Following video examples of his other music and clips of instruments used, the complete Fourth Symphony will be shown on video played by the New York Philharmonic. Although designed for the person with a non-musical background, the program will have much to interest the musically literate.

Coordinator:  Kay Carroll*
