Dr. Lisa Abdallah and Dr. Karen Devereaux Melillo (right) were "Remarks & Recognition - Special Guests" and speakers at the "Accomplishment Through Collaboration:  MassAHEC Network 30th Anniversary Celebration," on September 22, at the UMass Medical School, and featured in the program booklet, p. 12-13, on "Filling the Nursing Gap." Both Lisa, 1986, and Karen Devereaux Melillo, 1993, former Merrimack Valley AHEC Outstanding Nurse Award recipients were co-featured, as were three other AHEC graduates.

Nursing Faculty Present Research on Dehydration Reduction in the Community Dwelling Older Adult at National Conference

san fran 07Dr. Karen Devereaux Melillo and Dr. Lisa Abdallah presented their research on Dehydration Reduction in the Community Dwelling Older Adult at the 60th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America on November 19th, 2007 at the Hilton San Francisco and Towers, San Francisco, CA. Their poster presentation described the findings of a qualitative study conducted in collaboration with their faculty colleagues Dr. Susan Houde, Dr. Ruth Remington, and Dr. Lin Zhan on the perspectives of community health care providers relating to the problem of dehydration in the community dwelling older adult and strategies for hydration promotion.

 

  

Making a Difference!

bdn photo with mdphOn November 28, 2007, at the Greater Lawrence Community Health Center, Lawrence MA, the Patrick Administration announced a $1 million grant to fight racial and ethnic health disparities in Massachusetts. One million dollars in grants went to 35 agencies throughout the state.  UML Nursing received one of the 35 awards.  The three-year funded study by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Reducing Ethnic and Racial Health Disparities:  Workforce Development grant, will run from 11/07-6/10.  The title of the project is, "Bring Diversity to Nursing," and will target a variety of recruitment efforts to middle and high school students in the Lowell and Lawrence public schools. The announcement was made by Dr. Judy Ann Bigby, Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Department of Public Health Commissioner, John Auerbach at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center.
