Library ResoursesOccupational & Environmental Hygiene Research Guide Spring 2000 The Occupational & Environmental Hygiene Research Guide is designed to help students and others find occupational & environmental hygiene resources in the Department, at the University, and on the Web. It includes references and links to books, CD-ROMs, and Web-based databases. The guide also contains information on how to find articles in the peer-reviewed industrial hygiene journals. Part I: Where to Find It....... 1. UMass Lowell Libraries Books
CD-ROMs (see below, Part II) 2. TURI Technology Transfer Center (TTC) This library is located at 303 Pinanski and is open 9-5 Mon.-Fri. You should fill out the visitors' sign-in sheet when you visit. Please ask the staff for help, they are very kind and helpful. The TURI database indexes all TTC materials and is accessible on the TTC computer. The website is http://www.turi.org Click "Research" to get to the TTC. Books
CD-ROMs Patty's Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology: Clicking icon "Pattys" on the computer screen in the library will open this reference. TOMES Micromedex: Click the icon "TOMES Micromedex" to open. This reference has the following databases:
LOLI® (The Regulated Chemicals List of Lists) - This system allows users to check chemical substances against the regulatory or advisory lists in the database. REPRORISK® System - This unique collection of reproductive risk databases helps professionals evaluate reproductive risks of drugs, chemicals, and physical and environmental agents on males, females, and fetuses. RegsLink TM System - Comprehensive, integrated U.S. state and federal regulatory information. Dolphin - extensive collection of chemical and general MSDS. 3. On the Web
Part II: How to Search the Industrial Hygiene Literature.... NIOSHTIC includes journal articles, Health Hazard Evaluation reports, and other government reports. It is the primary database for searching IH topics, except that it is not currently being updated and was only partially updated in 1998. Additionally, it uses inconsistent search terms and probably is not 100% comprehensive. However, it is an excellent place to start. It is available on the Web via the UML Library system: http://libvax.uml.edu or directly at http://dialog.carl.org:3007/. If going via the Library, select Dialog@Carl under Electronic Resources. Once at the site, select the database called Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). (You can only access these resources from a UML computer, or via a UML PPP connection.) Note: the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) is also available on Dialog@Carl. The English language peer-reviewed IH journals include: Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (AOEH, published by ACGIH), American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal (AIHAJ, by AIHA), and Annals of Occupational Hygiene (OAH, by the British Occupational Hygiene Association). Additionally, the American Journal of Industrial Medicine (AJIM), the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM), Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM), Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health are medical journals that often have articles by industrial hygienists and on IH topics. This is especially true of AJIM and JOEM. These journals are all available in the TURI TTC, except for the volume you are looking for (just kidding!) If the TTC doesn't have an article, you can get it via InterLibrary Loan by filling out the info on the library webpage: http://libweb.uml.edu/home/ill.html American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal is on the Web at http://www.aiha.org/. The great thing is this full-text articles are available for 1997 to the present. Abstracts of articles are available for 1992 to the present. Indexes are available for articles from years prior to 1992. They offer a full search function. Annals of Occupational Hygiene is also on the Web at http://www.bohs.org (the British Occupational Hygiene Association) under Publications. You can search AOH Tables of Contents from 1995-1999 by keyword or author. Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is described on ACGIH's website, but they don't offer you anything but the contents of the current and future issues. http://www.acgih.org MEDLINE and Applied Science and Technology Abstracts and TOXLINE are on-line databases available via http://libvax.uml.edu. All are on the SilverPlatter set of CD-ROMs under Electronic Resources. MEDLINE abstracts AJIM, AIHAJ, AOH and JOEM. Applied abstracts AIHAJ. TOXLINE indexes all three IH journals and some medical journals. However, these databases are focused on their subjects (medicine, applied science and toxicology) and don't necessarily have all the articles on every topic from these journals. Environmental Abstracts and Chemical Abstracts are available at the CD-ROM stations in the Lydon Library. However, Chemical Abstracts are only available during "non-peak" hours. You can download software to use Chemical Abstracts during these hours instead of going in to the library. Both of these databases abstract Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. Table of contents for New Solutions: A Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health Policy is available on Carl Uncover which is one of the selections under Electronic Resources on the Library webpage http://libvax.uml.edu. Keep following the links for searching - you don't need a password for a basic search. You can search keywords, or the Table of Contents by going to Browse Journal Title List and entering New Solutions, then clicking on the result and hitting the button marked Journal Issues. Incidently, all journals, just about, have their Tables of Contents on Carl Uncover. P.S. Remember to use Boolean operators for better results: AND, OR, NOT and the wildcard operator * or ?. For example, entering "control*" will get articles with control, controlling, controls and controlled. Each database may have slightly different versions of these, so read their help screens. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
