Message from the President

October 21, 2007

Dear Eta Omega Chapter Members,

I wish all of you a very productive year 2007-2008 and may it hold prosperity and success for all of you to meet your new goals. As the autumn days have arrived the board members have been eagerly planning our Founder’s day event in October, fall induction in November and a social event for the spring.

Every president brings their unique perspective to the chapter and aligns it with the goals of the society. I have worked to build on the good work already done by those who have served before me.

Dr. Carol Picard, PhD, RN, current president (2005-2007) of STTI, stated, “Let’s maximize our capacity as nurse’s to live out caring in the human health experience through our connection with Sigma Theta Tau.” Please contact us with new ideas on programs or if you are willing to contribute to the chapter.

In Dr. Picard’s speech, From Vision to Action: The Call for Collaboration, she encouraged chapters to focus on the particular areas of the STTI strategic plan. As I entered this presidential term, I asked of myself and members of Eta Omega to engage in the action of our chapter in specific areas. We have accomplished a few of our goals:

          Knowledge:

Planned and offered two evidence-based nursing education programs
for nurses (members and non-members) in collaboration with health care institutions, organizations and schools.

The chapter opened these educational programs with other chapter activities involving a wider community of nurses, active and inactive Eta Omega members, and the public.

Leadership:

Creating a model and method of leadership succession specific for
our chapter (examples: www.asaenet.org; www.boardsource.org; www.future-focus.ca)

          Sustainability:

Surveyed the talents and interests of chapter membership and asked them to contribute to activities of interest. Currently, the Board members are creating an Eta Omega website (Fall 2007) and utilizing STTI monthly electronic newsletters to provide Eta Omega Chapter messages including events, awards, and position vacancies for ‘08 via an email system.

Our activities in 2006-2007 included educational programs for members and non-members on “Culture integration into Nursing education” and “The process of Nursing research funding”. The chapter held two inductions with many new members entering into Eta Omega with new ideas and excitement to participate in our chapter.

Eta Omega supported research by awarding a monetary research award to Betty Morgan and currently, two more Investigator awards this fall 2007. In addition, have contributed monetary support to the tribute reception at the STTI November convention for President Carol Picard for her contributions to nursing and STTI on behalf of Eta Omega Chapter, Region 15 member.  A Past President’s award was established and was awarded in spring 2007 to a student with an outstanding achievement in nursing.

Our goals in 2007-2008 as board members of Eta Omega is to increase service and sustainability therefore we have will be sending out electronic newsletters providing both the organizations headlines and news from Eta Omega Chapter for members sharing opportunities to attend events, participate in planning of programs, or volunteering for a leadership succession officer position.

In closing, I thank you for this opportunity to serve you as President and look forward to collaborating with all of you over these strategic goals. Let’s maximize our capacity as Eta Omega members to contribute to the success of the chapter through nursing excellence and a connection with Sigma Theta Tau International.

Best Regards,

Kelly L. Fisher, PhD, RN

President
