What is a nursing mentor?

  • A mentor is a wise and trusted advisor.

  • A mentor helps nursing students develop their own vision for the future.

  • Mentors foster caring and supportive relationships.

  • A structured 1 to 1 relationship/partnership that focuses on the needs of the student.

Why be a nursing mentor?

  • Strengthen the nursing profession.

  • Share knowledge and expertise.

  • Help a student nurse grow and develop into a professional.

  • Invest in the future.

  • Participate in a mutual sharing relationship.

Requirements

  • A Registered Nurse with a minimum of Baccalaureate preparation.

  • Invest time, energy and interest in the support of a nursing student.

  • Understanding of the needs of the nursing student.

  • Participate in one-to-two Bring Diversity to Nursing academic and/or social activities per semester.

  • Possess enthusiasm and a sense of humor.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate contact with his/her student within one week of assignment. If contacts have failed after three attempts, notify the BDN Coordinator of Diversity Support Services. (Note: Many  students who say they need help also say they will not initiate searches for appropriate resources).

  • Schedule a person-to-person contact.

  • Follow-up with weekly phone or e-mail contacts.

  • Monthly e-mail update to BDN Coordinator. Updates are due by the end of each month.

  • Above all, be yourself. Try to end sessions on a positive note. Realize there are no failures in a mentorship. Both you and your student will learn as much from mistakes as from successes.
