John Hamer is an Associate Professor of Accounting specializing in financial accounting and theory. He has written a number of articles and papers on these topics, including a published book entitled "Troubled Debt Restructuring: An Alternative to Bankruptcy?" by UMI Research Press.

Dr. Hamer's research has been mainly in the bankruptcy area and the study of the effect of state taxes in choosing plant locations. His research also involves the statement of cash flows and accounting for international operations, with four publications, two of which appeared in the International Journal of Accounting.

Recently he had worked with two other colleagues on accounting for stock options. They have just published their first article in Southern Collegiate Accountants, an independent organization. He has also collaborated with three other UML colleagues on a recent article for the Oil, Gas, and Energy Quarterly.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Professor Hamer taught financial and managerial accounting courses at Texas A&M University.

Professor Hamer holds a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
