Dr. Johnston's research interests include process monitoring, process control, and process development for injection molding. He also works in the areas of part design and mold design utilizing computer aided engineering and manufacturing.
Bio Sketch
Dr. Johnston grew up on Chautauqua Lake in western New York. He chose to pursue plastics engineering at Penn State Erie after touring the lab facilities and finding the injection molding machines fascinating. During his time at Penn State he worked at Lord Corporation, designing and testing rubber bearings for military applications.
Dr. Johnston came to UMass Lowell in 2003 to pursue his M.S. degree and subsequently his Ph.D. in plastics engineering. He researched instrumentation, analysis, and on-line simulations for injection molding under the advisement of Prof. Kazmer. During this time Dr. Johnston gained industrial experience working at Moldflow Corp., where he provided technical support and quality assurance testing. He also worked at Bausch & Lomb Inc. doing process validation and testing.
In the fall of 2007 Dr. Johnston started teaching courses at UMass Lowell. His course responsibilities have included Introduction to Engineering - 25.107, Introduction to Design - 26.218, and Plastics Mold Engineering I - 26.373. He serves as advisor for the Student Chapter of SPE and the Plastics Graduate Students Organization.
