Co-ops & Internships

The Cooperative Education Program is a partnership between employers and UMass Lowell designed to provide each co-op student with improved quality and depth of education and experience. Higher education provides academic training and administrative coordination. Employers provide meaningful, paid work experience, supervision of technical skills development, and a formal written evaluation for the student.

The Cooperative Education program gives you the chance to: 

• explore your interests,
• enhance your technical competence,
• learn new skills,
• work in the real world, and
• earn money for your education.

You can participate in the Cooperative Education program if you:

• have completed your freshman year and at least one full academic semester at UML,
• maintain good academic standing, and
• get the approval of your department's faculty co-op advisor.

Meaningful Experience

Cooperative Education at UML will give you the opportunity to work in your field. You gain professional experience that makes you more competitive in the job market. In fact, co-op jobs often turn into full time jobs after graduation.

Academic Credit

Cooperative Education at UML offers up to six academic credits for your successful participation. For 500 hours of an approved co-op work experience - whether on a full-time or part-time basis, students may be awarded three credits.

Flexibility

Cooperative Education fits your schedule. At UML, part-time co-op jobs can begin at any time during the year. Full-time co-op jobs coincide with the University's academic semester calendar - so they will not conflict with your academic schedule. The co-op program is completely voluntary. You can try Cooperative Education for just one term or participate for several co-op semesters.

Want to Get Involved?

1. Visit the Office of Career Services (OCS) at 200 Southwick Hall to review the binder of co-op positions offered by employers.
2. Use the OCS website to register with the office and complete a resume on the OCS web registration.
3. Attend a scheduled co-op orientation session or make an appointment to meet with the faculty co-op advisor.
