Scholarships
The scholarships listed here are normally awarded during the admissions process. With the exception of the Assistive Technology Design Fair and US FIRST scholarships, you do not need to apply to be considered for these scholarships. For the Assistive Technology Design Fair and US FIRST scholarships, fill out the College of Engineering scholarship application form (pdf). All merit scholarships for entering freshmen are subject to the following minimum criteria: a high school GPA of 3.25 (out of a possible 4.0) and a combined SAT score of at least 1100 on the Math and Reading portions (out of 1600).
Commonwealth Scholarship
Four-year "free ride" scholarships that cover tuition, fees and on-campus room and board for Massachusetts residents without regard to financial need are awarded by the admissions office to a limited number of high school seniors who have a minimum cumulative, recalculated high school GPA of 3.75, combined SAT scores of 1400 or above, and are in the top 5% of their graduating class. Awards are renewed annually for a maximum of four years, if the student maintains a 3.25 cumulative grade point average.
John and Abigail Adams Scholarship
This scholarship is automatically available to Massachusetts public high school students who score in the Advanced category in either the Mathematics or the English language arts section of the grade 10 MCAS test, score in the Proficient or Advanced category on the second subject (Mathematics or English language arts), AND have a combined MCAS score on these assessments that ranks in the top 25% in their school district. The Adams Scholarship provides a full tuition waiver, renewable annually for up to four years.
Chancellor's Scholarship
This scholarship is available to new freshmen in all undergraduate colleges who are in the top 25% of their graduating high school class, have a combined SAT score of 1200 or above and have demonstrated need. It provides up to $3,000 a year toward tuition and fees and $2,000 toward on-campus room and board. It is renewable for a total of four years, if the student maintains a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and continues to demonstrate financial need.
Dean's Scholarship
Renewable Dean's merit scholarships are awarded annually to incoming freshmen, each with a value of between $2,500 to $5,000 per year. Entering freshmen considered for a Dean's Scholarship must be Massachusetts residents who have as a minimum a high school GPA of 3.25 (out of a possible 4.0) and a combined SAT score of at least 1100 in the Math and Reading sections. Recipients are selected by the Dean of each of UMass Lowell's undergraduate colleges on the basis of academic achievements and extra curricular activities. This scholarship is renewable for a total of four years, if the student maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 beginning at the end of freshman year. Students do not need to apply separately for this scholarship - they will be considered automatically as part of the Admissions process. Up to 15 full $5,000 renewable Dean's scholarships (or equivalent) are awarded to incoming freshmen each year in the College of Engineering.
Assistive Technology Design Fair Scholarship
The College of Engineering offers scholarships each year that are available only to students who have participated in the UMass Lowell High School Assistive Technology Design Fair (ATDF). These scholarships will be awarded to the top applicants based on merit, subject to the same GPA and SAT restrictions as for the Dean's scholarship. Each award will be for $2,500 per year, renewable annually if the student maintains full time status in the College of Engineering and a minimum 3.0 GPA. This scholarship will be in addition to any additional scholarship funding that they may receive, up to the estimated cost of education (tuition, fees, room, board). To apply, please contact the Office of the Dean of Engineering directly, indicating the project, advisor and year of the ATDF project in which you were a team member.
FIRST Robotics Scholarship
The College of Engineering offers one Dean's merit scholarship to students who have participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). This scholarship will be awarded to the top applicant accepted into the College of Engineering based on merit, and there are no restrictions. Each scholarship will be for up to $5,000 per year, renewable annually if the student maintains full-time status in the College of Engineering and a minimum 3.0 GPA. This scholarship will be in addition to any additional scholarship funding that they may receive, up to the estimated cost of education (tuition, fees, room, board). To apply, please download the scholarship application form (pdf) and submit the completed form together with the recommendation letter from the FIRST faculty adviser directly to the Office of the Dean of Engineering directly by February 15. Applicants after February 15 will be merged with the other students competing for Dean's scholarships.
The following are scholarships available to non-Massachusetts residents who are not part of the New England Board of Higher Education Regional Student Program or Proximity Student Program. These scholarships are awarded by the Admissions Office upon recommendation of the Dean:
Provost's Scholarship
Merit-based renewable scholarship worth $7,000/yr, available to Freshman and transfer out-of-state students.
Minimum requirements for Freshman: GPA of 3.75 and a minimum Math + Verbal SAT score of 1400, or a composite ACT score of 32. Transfer students must have a college GPA of 3.90. Awards are renewed annually for a maximum of four years (three years for transfer students), if the student maintains a 3.25 cumulative grade point average at the end of each academic year. In the event that a student fails to meet the GPA renewal requirements, this scholarship will be reduced to the Mill City Award (see below).
Academic Council Scholarship
Merit-based renewable scholarship worth $5,000/yr, available to Freshman and transfer out-of-state students.
Minimum requirements for Freshman: GPA of 3.25 and a minimum Math + Verbal SAT score of 1100, or a composite ACT score of 24. Transfer students must have a college GPA of 3.25. Awards are renewed annually for a maximum of four years (three years for transfer students), if the student maintains a 3.00 cumulative grade point average at the end of each academic year. In the event that a student fails to meet the GPA renewal requirements, this scholarship will be reduced to the Mill City Award (see below).
Mill City Award
Renewable scholarship worth $3,000/yr, available to Freshman and transfer out-of-state students. Minimum requirements for Freshman: minimum SAT Math + Verbal score of 1000 or composite ACT of 21. Transfer students must have a college GPA of at least 3.00. Renewable annually for a maximum of four academic years subject to full-time status and good academic standing at the end of each academic year. Failure to meet status and good academic standing at the end of each academic year may result in elimination of the scholarship.
College of Engineering Endowed and Non-Endowed Scholarships
The Francis College of Engineering at UMass Lowell annually awards more than $100,000 in undergraduate scholarships annually, including the following available to incoming freshmen, regardless of residency:
Joseph Priestley Scholarship
The Priestley Fund will provide scholarship assistance to graduates of Lowell High School who are entering the Francis College of Engineering at UMass Lowell as freshman. The fund will provide scholarships to students who demonstrate academic promise and good character.
Alexander Stewart Scholarship
The Stewart Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman engineering student. The recipient must be a Massachusetts resident, with first preference being a resident of Andover. The fund will provide two scholarships of $500 each.
Francis McKone Scholarship
To provide scholarship assistance to students enrolled in the programs of the Francis College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Gandolfo Family Scholarship
Joseph and Sandy Gandolfo have established this endowment fund to provide scholarships to entering freshman students at the Francis College of Engineering. Scholarships shall be awarded by the Dean based on the following preferences: Recipients will have at least a 2.7 grade point average out of high school, will be residents of the North Shore, and must submit a 500 word essay to the Dean. Essay forms may be picked up at the Dean's office.
Krishna & Aruna Vedula Scholarship
The purpose of the fund will be for scholarship aid for engineering students with high financial need at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Gregg Hughes Fund (for E-council members)
The Greg T. Hughes Fellowship is given each year by Greg's father Thomas Hughes. Awards are made to members of the Francis College of engineering E-Council for the engineering students. Members of the E-Council must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be active members in the council. Awards are made yearly.
Academic Engineer Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to acknowledge the additional coursework or extra curricular activities from humanities, social sciences, and fine arts that engineering students engage in during their tenure as a student at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The following guidelines as to administration of this scholarship will apply:
1. The student must be entering the junior year in any discipline offered by the Francis College of Engineering.
2. The student must have maintained a minimum of a 3.0/4.0 GPA scale.
3. The student should be involved in an activity from the humanities, social sciences, or fine arts area. An example would be in Music, Theatre, English (Beat Attitudes Conference), etc.
4. The student must demonstrate financial need.
5. The student must be in good standing on the University of Massachusetts Lowell campus.
Eagle Scholarship for Women in Engineering
To benefit women engineering students at UMass Lowell's Francis College of Engineering. First preferences shall be for women returning from the work force to pursue graduate level degrees in Engineering.
Francis College of Engineering Scholarship
The Francis College of Engineering Endowment Fund, created by the generosity of Francis McKone '56, gives the Dean of the college the flexibility to award scholarships to outstanding incoming freshman students. Awards are made at the Dean's discretion to students in the top one third of their high school classes who have been accepted and plan on enrolling in the Francis College of Engineering in the fall.
The Laska Family Endowed Scholarship Fund
The purpose of the fund will be to award scholarships for University of Massachusetts Lowell engineering students who have demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship.
The Edward J. Snyder, Jr. Endowed Scholarship
The purpose of the fund will be to award scholarships for University of Massachusetts Lowell students pursuing degrees at the Francis College of Engineering.
Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell Scholarships
The Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell (IUAAL) is offering scholarships to deserving students. Scholarships are awarded in January for the second semester.
