Graduate Degree and Certificate Programs

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering offers two doctoral programs, two masters programs and three certificate programs for qualified students.

Doctoral Programs

Doctor of Engineering

The Doctor of Engineering degree is offered by the James Francis College of Engineering with a specialization in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Candidates for this degree may select courses and research topics in one of five areas: Environmental Engineering, Geoenvironmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Transportation Engineering. The Doctor of Engineering Program is offered through Mechanical Engineering. Therefore to apply to the Doctor of Engineering Program using the online application available at the Graduate School web site, indicate Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Environmental Opt. (Eng. D) when choosing a major. In your Statement of Purpose be sure to indicate which focus area you are interested in (e.g., Environmental Engineering, Geoenvironmental Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering).

Ph.D. Program in Chemistry - Environmental Studies Option

A Ph.D. in Chemistry with an option in Environmental Studies is offered jointly by the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The program of study offers advanced course work in chemistry and environmental engineering and permits specialization that best suits student interests.  Participating faculty in Chemistry and Civil and Environmental Engineering have a wide variety of research interests and can provided candidates with opportunities to perform interdisciplinary research.

Masters Programs

Master of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering

Graduate study in Civil & Environmental Engineering is an intensive program of instruction at an advanced technical level. The program permits students to design, in consultation with their advisor, a plan of study that meets individual goals and career objectives. Program options include Environmental Engineering, Geoenvironmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Transportation Engineering. Admission to a particular engineering option is open to applicants with undergraduate degrees in engineering, mathematics or science.
 
The degree requires successful completion of 30 credit hours of course work or 24 credit hours of instruction and a publishable thesis or 27 hours of course work and preparation of a project report. Successful completion of undergraduate prerequisite courses is required prior to registering for graduate courses. However, undergraduate prerequisites and selected graduate courses that do not have prerequisites may be taken during the first year of study with permission of the student's advisor.

Master of Science in Environmental Studies (Environmental Engineering Sciences Concentration)

This interdisciplinary program offers a Master of Science in Environmental Studies (Environmental Engineering Sciences Concentration) with a thesis or a non-thesis track. Enrollment in the program is open to individuals with a baccalaureate degree in science (e.g., biology, chemistry, geology, physics). Others may be admitted with the approval of the graduate coordinator.  Students may make up course prerequisite deficiencies while in the program. Thesis and non-thesis track options are available. The thesis track requires completion of an approved program of study involving a minimum of 24 credits of core courses and electives, and 6 credits of thesis, consisting of laboratory research or scholarly investigation for a total of 30 credits. The non-thesis track requires completion of an approved program of study involving 30 credits of core courses and electives. An alternative option within the M.S. Environmental Studies program is the Atmospheric Science Concentration.

Certificate Programs

The department offers three certificate programs:

• Civil and Environmental Engineering
• Environmental Studies
• Sustainable Infrastructure for Developing Nations

(Courses are scheduled in the evening to provide study opportunities for students with full-time employment.)

Sustainable Infrastructure for Developing Nations

Graduate level instruction for this certificate prepares engineers and allied professionals for working in developing regions. It develops the special skills and awareness necessary for development of functionally sustainable infrastructure. The technical material in the certificate provides advanced technical knowledge fully applicable to situations of both domestic and international infrastructure development.
 
Four courses are required for completion of the certificate. Graduate courses are normally offered in evening hours.
